Atmospheric Research Tutorials

I have participated in two Cookoff events (2024,2025) by Project Pythia, a working group for geoscience education and research. These week-long events are dedicated to creating "Cookbooks", which are self-contained educational Jupyter notebooks that help researchers learn specific methods and/or subjects.

Dust Cookbook

This cookbook is an introduction to analyzing how Saharan Dust particle concentration relates to atmospheric phenomena such as temperature, wind and humidity. In addition to introducing the format of the related dataset and pre-processing, we introduce predictive methods such as Self-Organizing Maps, Random Forests and feature selection through Principle Component Analysis for a geoscientist audience that might no be familiar with machine learning.

We present preliminary findings that confirm the theory on the most informative features when measurements from a single station is considered. Incorporating the spatial information through measurements from neighboring stations is the next step.

MPAS/JEDI Cookbook

MPAS and JEDI scientific computing tools used in weather forecasting and atmospheric research. This cookbook is an introduction to the formatting and post-processing of the complex outputs from these systems.
